Attitude Adjustment Required!
Your business growth and success has a lot to do with your attitude. You could be an outstanding Inspector that catches every problem, but if your attitude is poor, you may end up that way too.
There are two important questions here that you need to answer for yourself to help to grow your business. How you answer these questions is a direct reflection of how much business you can expect.
What do you think about Real Estate Agents?
Ask any Home Inspector what they think about Real Estate agents and you are likely to get a variety of responses. Most of them negative. Home Inspectors think that Real Estate Agents are:
- just out to close the deal
- lazy
- overpaid
- pushy
- not looking out for our Clients best interest
- greedy
- selfish
- annoying
- don’t know anything about quality homes and don’t care
- professional
- caring
Ask a Real Estate Professional what they think about Home Inspectors, and you will also get a wide variety of answers. Many of these negative as well.
What Do Real Estate Agents Think of Home Inspectors?
Real Estate agents think Home Inspectors are:
- too quick to scare clients
- deal breakers
- too detailed in their reporting
- a necessary evil
- a great asset to the industry
- frustrating
- difficult
- a protection for themselves
- great for their clients
As a Home Inspector it is essential that you build a strong network with Real Estate agents. They are your first line of referral. If you think of them as “Shifty, pushy, greedy, lazy, selfish, annoying good-for-nothings”, that will probably show up in your attitude. Not only do you need to shift your thinking, but you need to convince the agents that you are not the “frustrating, difficult deal-breaker” that they see you as.
Improve your attitude about the other Professionals that you deal with. You’ll be amazed how the small process of shifting your thinking will bring you more business. Spend some time evaluating what you think of Real Estate agents. Then spend some time looking at the reality and putting some objectivity into your thinking. Like any industry, there are good Agents and bad Agents, find the good ones in your area and put effort into becoming the Inspector of choice for those Agents. Set yourself up with a network of professionals that you respect and who respect you. Your business will grow and you will have more respect for yourself.
