Setting Goals for Growth

If your goals are in your head, they are not goals. Over and over again, it's been written that one of the main differences between successful people and others is their clear, definable goas.

The biggest mistake people make is thinking “Hey, I know what I want to achieve, why should I write it down?”.  Finally, somewhere along the line you will realize that not only are you not getting anywhere, but you aren't sure where you want to ge in the first place.

Zig Ziglar, a famous speaker, once asked “How can you hit a target that you can’t see?”. He was completely right. If you want to live your life and run your business meandering all over, by all means, live without goals. But if you want to be focused, driven and clear on where you are headed, then write down your goals. At the very least the process of writing them down will make you think about what it is you truly want. Then, you have something to measure against so you know if you are ahead or behind.

That’s the problem though, isn’t it? Who really wants to know if we’re winning or losing.  As long as we’re not sure, we can bury our heads in the sand and pretend we’re ahead. Fear of failure has held back more than one outstanding individual with great potential. So, these are the very basic steps you need to follow to set a goal.

1. Your goal must be realistic

2. Your goal must have a time frame (eg: I will do 300 home inspections in 2011)

3. Your goal must be written down

4. Your goal must be measurable (so you can tell if you achieved it or not)

Look at each of your goals and write some notes. Decide if you need help with your goal. If so, who can help you.

Do you really want to challenge yourself? Find a partner like your spouse, an Inspector from another area, your mother or even your kids. Get someone to check up on you.  Your friends and family have a vested interest in how hard you work as they will benefit from the fruits of your labour. Get somebody behind you who will support your goals and your dreams so that you can achieve them. Share your goals with them and ask them to help to keep you on track.

You don’t have to do this alone. If you writed down clear goals, you will keep your targets clear and grow your business faster then you ever dreamed.
